Cold and Flu Alert: Create a Healthy Classroom

(ARA) - School is an amazing experience for children, but with cold and flu season fast approaching, sick days can often come between kids and their education. According to the American Institute of Health, the common cold causes children to miss 22 million school-days each year.

"We see it every year, pediatrician's waiting areas become standing-room only during cold and flu season," says Dr. Paul S. Horowitz, M.D., F.A.A.P., also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. "Take measures to prepare against the cold and flu season. Sign the family up for flu shots and make sure everyone practices healthy hygiene habits during this peak season. One area to look out for is the surfaces in your children's classroom, where the germs that cause the cold and flu may thrive."

According to a new Scholastic survey of America's teachers, more than two-thirds of respondents report that their school's custodial staff does not disinfect classrooms regularly. Teachers also reported that it is common for students to come to school sick.

Dr. Horowitz offers these tips for creating a healthy classroom environment:

* Wash your hands. Teach children to use warm, soapy water and to rub their hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds (about the same time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice).

* Clean surfaces. Adults should use disinfecting wipes regularly on common surfaces to decrease the level of germs and help reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses on surfaces that can cause illness.

* Avoid touching. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. These are entry points for germs.

Education is the first step in creating a healthier environment for children. The Clorox Company is dedicated to helping parents, teachers and students control germs in the classroom.
