Benefits of a Cedar Hot Tub

By : Tom Oak

Before the rise in popularity of home hot tubs, which can be manufactured in anything from plastic vinyl to fibreglass, the traditional appearance was of solid wood. Not only did these feel more secure and were less prone to any kind of material damage, they were just more attractive to look at, too. Now, with home aesthetics being so important to homeowners, wood is becoming more popular again, and this is certainly true of cedar hot tubs.

One of the immediate benefits to having a hot tub made of cedar is that wood by nature is extremely durable and weather resistant, especially Cedar and Redwood. Look at any rainforest or areas of woodland that is affected by severe weather, and you'll see for yourself the conditions solid wood can withstand. This type of protection transfers directly to your wooden tub, and ensures that not only will your investment be beautiful to look at, it'll be well guarded against the likes of decay and rot.

Another cosmetic benefit is the actual aroma that the wood emits. Everybody knows how relaxing and therapeutic a soak in a hot tub can be. If you combine this with aromatherapy candles and a tub that offers a natural, warm-smelling fragrance when in use, the feeling of complete escape is final.

With the type of wood that cedar is, hot tubs made form this material are far less likely to have any problems when it comes to wood rot than many other types of tubs. Due to the way cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, it makes for an extremely long lasting and insulated tub, especially when combined with the steel hoops that bind the wood in place, keeping both water and warmth enclosed in its attractive space.

Yet even though the design and build of a cedar hot tub is based around traditional methods passed down centuries of woodsmen from all over the world, the options available are anything but archaic. Just like their plastic brethren, these solid pieces of equipment come with the latest filtration systems, multi-stage pumps, electric and digital spa packs and LCD controls.

With maintenance of a cedar hot tub as simple as keeping a weekly check of the chemical levels that filter the water and waste, and following similar methods that are used to keep plastic tubs clean, it's incredibly pain-free too. The main thing you have to remember is that as wood is not a man-made fibre, the chemicals needed to clean it are different. Bromide is usually the recommended agent but to be sure, check with your supplier.

An interesting fact that may just persuade you that a cedar tub is the way to go is this: in an experiment comparing what was healthier, bacteria including E-coli, salmonella and listeria was placed into the water of both a plastic and wooden tub. Contrary to expectations, the wood one came out on top, eliminating the dangerous bacteria in less than three minutes. Proof indeed, not only is wood a beautiful hot tub consideration, it's safer, too.
