My neighbor graciously provided me with several large hostas. They are maybe 1 and 2 feet in diameter. I am curious if I should split them up into smaller ones and hope they take for next year. Are there any guidelines that I should follow to help get these things going?

Normally perennials will be ready for dividing every three years and although spring is the typical time for dividing most perennials, late summer and fall will work too. You can use a serrated knife to cut the hostas into 3 or 4 similar sized cuttings. They usually do fine, just remember to use mulch if your landscaping allows it. This will help with maintaining a consistent level of moisture.
